    The thing is this: if you were to get closer to the model with the 50 you would get much more background blur. I have used both lenses in the past and the 85mm hands down is better for portraiture. However the 50mm 1.2 is just as amazing a lens and the background blur is just as good but you have to get much closer to the model otherwise you get environmental portraits. The lens that beats both the 50 1.2 and the 851.2 with background blur is the 135 1.8 The difference between the 135 and the 85 is that the 85 1.2 beats the 135 when it comes to subject separation but the 135 beats the 85 when it comes to background blur

    Despite its heft, the RF 85mm 1.2 balances nicely with the R5 body - optically it's the best lens within the RF lineup (maybe together with the RF135mm 1.8) - I can highly recommend it.

      Ohhh that is interesting. That might be an interesting video to do as well! Use the popular 24-70 and set it at most of the popular prime lengths. Compare the difference. Primes are usually sharper but I know some photographers who ONLY use the 24-70 for weddings. So that could be a good idea for a video!

      @@77dris ya I really don't understand what's going on. DSLR days were when r&d big breakthroughs in lens design were happening that laid the groundwork for the amazing glass we have today. It's technically easier to make lenses for mirrorless as well. I think it has to do with cameras hitting a wall performance wise and people aren't buying bodies like they used to. In the nineties every new model iteration was a huge leap in tech. I think companies are now relying on glass more than bodies for profits.

      @@nicedward7544 I agree with you that a lot of people, regardless of age, like to buy the latest and greatest. I would rather put that $ toward a vacation or a handbag than another camera. Also what's funny is, I second shoot for someone who even though I have told multiple times I am most familiar with my Canon 5D Mark IV, they insist I shoot on my mirrorless R camera (that I use to film youtube videos on- love it for that) because they "prefer the mirrorless look". I was gagged because mirrorless doesn't have a "look" it's just the technology. It might look a little different but honestly, in the end result. It's not. Perfect example.

    Canon just puts a bad taste in my mouth anymore. I shot Canon since before digital up until 5 years ago. They shot themselves in the foot and abandoned long time customers with the whole third party lens fiasco. Any new photographers that think they want Canon I tell them to stick with EF or go somewhere else lol. I'd still take a 1dxiii or 5div over any of their mirrorless simply because I can't promote their new ways. Never thought I'd stray away but here we are.

    • @77dris
      @77dris 26 дней назад

      Naw. The thing Canon has up its sleeve that Sony and Nikon do not is that their adapted EF lenses work as well as native RF glass. I shot Canon for over 15 years, then recently started fresh with the R6 Mark II and got Sigma Art primes and the EF 70-200 2.8 III. They are fantastic and the AF with these lenses is more reliable than I got with a Sony A7IV with mirrorless lenses (that cam has some eye AF issues). I had the 1DIII and 5DIV for many years (shot pro with the 1D for 12 years) and the R6 II with adapted lenses blows them away for AF accuracy... it never misses. I got the Sigma Art 50 1.4 and it focuses faster than the RF versions, and it cost $959 new in Canadian money (so about $750 us or so) with a 7 year Sigma Warranty. And it's actually lighter than the RF version even with the adapter. The whole "Canon sucks because they refuse to let third party lenses" is mostly just a big RUclips meme often promoted by Sony people. It would be nice to have that third party option but it's not the end of the world because the adapter system works so well.

    • @nicedward7544
      @nicedward7544 26 дней назад

      @@77dris not true. Sony and Nikon both do this well.. My EF 200 2.8L prime on third gen Sony is faster and more accurate AF than it was on my 5div lol... And that's on a 7 year old Sony.. Half of my glass is ef mount. Rf glass is either built like crap or way over priced. There is no middle ground where third party would sit. Not saying Canon is bad quality in any way just bad with some of their practices and policies as a company.

    I never liked 50mm, everything looks too...normal, it has nothing special. I never found the background attractive, compared to other focal lengths, such as 35 85 etc. Yes, with any focal length you can take a spectacular picture, wide, tele, etc. 35mm gives you more context, creates a story behind it, if it's also 1.2...1.4 it's brilliant. 50mm is neither an ostrich nor a camel, it is a slightly unsuccessful combination. If we talk about bokeh, yes, it blurs more than a 35mm, but that's how you buy an 85mm. With a 35mm you can shoot an event like a hotel room, a hall, a closed space, a church, etc. with 50mm you have some emotions, if it is a closed space, it is difficult. Personally, it is a lens that would invest a maximum of 200 euros, in no case 1000 for 1.2.

      Thank you so much! I agree, I don't know how to fix it. It's way too soft. I used a 50mm to film this so maybe that was the problem. I usually do an old zoom lens. But the videos I've been filming this month (they wont be out until later so idk if this is helpful) are with an RF zoom lens.

    i’m wondering - how do you film these? do you have an assistant with you or is it just an additional camera on a tripod?

    The 50mm tells The Story, and the 85mm tells Her Story.
